The CAP Collaborative recognizes climate action succeeds when all communities have equal access to and a voice in the benefits of local climate efforts. The effects of climate change also tend to have greater impact on socioeconomic and geographically vulnerable communities. To help support this goal, the Collaborative has convened a Climate Equity Advisory Committee made up of leaders from local non-profits who work closely with more marginalized members of our community.
This fall the committee established a definition of climate equity that states:
Climate equity ensures that all people—regardless of their race, color, gender, age, sexuality, national origin, ability, or income— can access, provide input to, and share in the benefits of climate action. Climate equity works to redress unequal burdens made worse by climate change.
Achieving climate equity means maximizing the benefits of climate action while minimizing or eliminating additional harm.
Equitable climate action therefore will:
- Be diverse, far-reaching and inclusive.
- Addresses language, economic, logistical or other barriers that may prevent members of our community from participating in climate programs.
- Use opportunities to help alleviate unequal burdens faced by various demographics.
- Evaluate indirect impacts of actions to prevent inadvertently creating additional harm.
This winter the committee will develop a framework through which to pass the CAP’s recommended actions, advance outreach efforts and continue to research best practices. The Routt County CAP Collaborative joins other regional counties such as Eagle, Pitkin and Summit counties, advancing this important work.
