Routt County Collaborating for Climate – March 2026 Newsletter

Mid-March’s unprecedented winter heat wave, more typical for June or even July, was a stark reminder that we are dealing with the impacts of climate change now. On March 25, Steamboat Springs hit a record high of 76 degrees F, according to data from ACIS. This is six degrees higher than previous monthly records from 2004, 2012, and 2017. Snowpack level in Routt County is 63% its historical medium with little/no signs of additional accumulation this season, and is rapidly melting. City of Steamboat Springs and the Mt. Werner Water and Sanitation District have moved to Stage 2 drought restrictions effective immediately, and the Fire Department and Routt County Wildfire Council are urging community members to prepare now for an elevated risk of severe wildfires this summer.

Despite these challenges, we must remain optimistic and proactive in how we face our changing climate. The cause of the problem and the solutions are known. This monthly newsletter is intended to keep community members informed, while also highlighting the good things we are moving forward and opportunities for individual and community action. The challenges ahead are significant, but progress is possible!
